To check which is correct, it is often useful to remove the
proper noun. The following examples are obviously wrong.


Mrs Jones gave some sweets to I.
Me is going to London.

‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, ‘we’ and ‘they’ aresubjectsand are usually
at the beginning of the sentence.

‘Me’, ‘her’, ‘him’, ‘us’ and ‘them’ areobjectsand
usually follow theverb.

However, when a verb is ‘understood’ at the end of the
sentence, it is thepersonal pronounthat is used:


He is taller thanI (am).
She was angrier thanhe (was).

Neither ‘am’ nor ‘was’ needs to be included at the end of the
sentences. They are both ‘understood’. The following exam-
ples are therefore incorrect:
