In Reporting Services 2005 and 2008, we could create the functionality that we see in reports containing
KPI’s. However, it took a little creativity in the use of expressions. For example, if you wanted to show an
image based on a certain value in a result set, you would need to set the visibility of each of the images to
be based on an expression. That approach is not too difficult to implement, but it is a more difficult to
maintain. In 2008 R2, we were provided this functionality right out of the box with the Indicator report
item.
Often times, the consumers of our reports like to see a visual indicator as to the trend in a basic
