Lopez (September 2001) reports that in the East Bay area overall, those
under age 18 are more racially and ethnically diverse than the population
as a whole. A larger percentage of the under-18 group self-identify as
more than one race. From the available figures it could be posited that
some 30 percent of the school-aged children in Oakland are AAVE
speakers, while another 20 percent may speak a language other than


English at home (Figure 16.2).^5
