(ff) #1

There are many other kinds and points of variation in the verb systems of
American English, some of which have been tracked for a long time. For
instance, the data for A Survey of Verb Forms in the Eastern United States
(Atwood 1953) was collected at least five years earlier, or some 60 years
ago. Atwood noted variation in distribution of the preterite and past
participles in many verbs. Figure 2.11 is one of the maps from his atlas, this
one showing the distribution of past tense variants for the verb to drink. In
my own variety of American English, drink is a solidly strong verb (We
drink Kool-Aid; we drank Kool-Aid) but there are areas where the verb is
weak (We drinked Kool-Aid).
