Welcome

‘It’s cold outside, there’s no
kind of atmosphere, I’m all alone...
more or less...’ Luckily for us, those
immortal words in the theme song
for Rob Grant and Doug Naylor’s
Eighties classic Red Dwarf isn’t true.
It’s actually getting pretty warm outside, the
atmosphere is a little dirty but it’s still there and
we’re certainly not at alone.
We may feel like we’re actually living a sci-fi
movie right now with the onslaught of Coronavirus
and things might be scary, but it’s at times like these
that we must all band together. If the last surviving
crew members of the spaceship Red Dwarf can
all get along to survive the perils of outer space,
then we certainly can. Humanity’s eternal optimism
and endurance during times of strife is the subject
of many of the fi lms, TV shows and books that we
love here in the genre community, and now we’re
faced with a real-life pandemic we can look to the
lessons learned in many of these.
Finding solace in the escapism of a good book,
fi lm or programme, is a positive way genre can aid
us right now and we have plenty of that this month.
From a horror point of view, we have an interview
with the producing genius that is Jason Blum about
The Hunt, Get Out and The Invisible Man. We
also chat to Rose Glass about her holy horror,
Saint Maud, and Scott Cooper about his mythical
monster movie, Antlers.
For those in need of a TV show fi x we speak
to the legendary Doug Naylor and Chris Barrie
about the new 90-minute special of UK comedy
Red Dwarf; take a long, slow, ambling look at the
newest addition to The Walking Dead franchise
with World Beyond; and check out Amazon’s
beautiful new show based on a series of paintings:
Tales From The Loop.
Elsewhere, for those of us who can’t resist a bit
of nostalgia, we take a look back at Eighties cult
classic Flight Of The Navigator; discuss the creation
of some of the iconic fi ght sequences in Star Wars;
and go deep with an eight-page Complete Guide
on the entire Alien franchise (a box-set defi nitely
worth pulling out if you’re feeling isolated!).
Our industry has always been about community,
and though we may not be able to sit in a movie
theatre together right now, we can still discuss
and pursue our shared love for all things genre.
Taking into account the effects of this virus on our
industry, please bear with us that some of the dates
and details in this issue may have changed by the
time you read this. But we’re still here, regularly
updating our website and social media while
blowing the dust off some of our long-forgotten
box-sets. If you have any queries, questions, casual
observations or
maybe even a
really good joke
you’ve heard,
make sure you hit
us up on all the
Rachael Harper, Editor usual platforms.
