Fantasy VII Remake,
building on the system
introduced by the PS1 game. Not
only does that allow you to
customise party members’ roles, it
also lets you upgrade and improve
their skills. The more you use skills,
the more they level up.

All magic is obtained through this
system, and you can improve specific

Materia by using it and levelling it up.
That encompasses offensive magic like
Fire, healing magic like Cura and
Regen, which restore HP instantly and
over time respectively, and Assess,
which gives you more information on
enemies and can help you figure out
better strategies.
But don’t expect to see only Materia
based on the original game. New
Materia take advantage of the quicker
nature of Remake’s faster-paced

counterattack when they dodge enemy
hits at the last minute. This type of
skill, when combined with shortcut
abilities, means combat feels fast and
frantic, almost like a character action
game with a tactical edge.
Different equipment has varying
numbers of Materia slots, and can be
upgraded to fit more in. If slots have

connections, the set Materia in those
slots can interact with each other –
for example, in the original game using
All Materia made magic affect an area
rather than a single target. This time
equipment can have abilities baked in,
such as the Buster Sword’s Focused
Thrust. Rather than just equipping the
biggest numbers, it’s worth putting
time into picking the right equipment
and Materia for the task ahead.
