health and education projects.
Jess has also opened several
refill stations in cafés and shops
in nearby towns to make it
easier for regular customers to
top up their liquid detergents,
hand soaps and shampoos. More
refill stations are coming soon,
including one in a pub. Reducing
waste in your household is
one of the best ways there is
to help save the planet,” Jess
says. “Supermarkets are jumping
in on the refill concept, but if
I go out of business in a few
years because zero-waste
shopping has become the
norm, I’ll be happy with that.”

SOUTH WEST
Earth.Food.Love, 101 High
Street, Totnes, Devon
thezerowasteshop.co.uk.
O Believed to be the first of its
kind in the UK, Earth.Food.Love
has been an inspiration to many
of the social entrepreneurs and
activists who have founded their
own zero-waste stores in the
three years since it first opened.
Keen to start a revolution, its
owners Richard and Nicola
Eckersley have produced a
free and detailed guide to help
others follow in their footsteps,
available on their website.
When Richard and Nicola
moved to Totnes from a
city-centre apartment in
Manchester with their baby
daughter Willow, their dream
was to run an organic food
shop. But after being inspired
by Original Unverpackt, an
architect-designed bulk food
market in Berlin, they recognised
the zero-waste concept as a way
to stand out on a high street
already well endowed with
independent and ethical shops.
Wholly organic and primarily
a food shop – although they
do stock cleaning products –
Earth.Food.Love, which opened
in March 2017, carries around
400 different dried organic
foodstuffs including herbs and
spices, pastas, grains, dried fruits
and pulses. “We wanted to
reinvent the way people shop,
to help bring back a sense of
community to the high street,”
Richard says. “When you
come to our shop, you get an
experience. You’re not just in
and out. You slow down a bit.”
Earth.Food.Love has also
spawned a sister business,
ReRooted (rerootedorganic.
co.uk), which grew out of the
organic plant milks that Richard
started making in the shop in
response to customer demand.
He and his business partner now
produce three thousand litres
of organic plant milk each week
and deliver it locally in reusable
glass bottles. Their first oat
milk has just been launched and
national delivery via Riverford
Organic Farmers will be up and
running by the end of March.
