Q: Where do we pick up?
JM Right where we left off.
Lydia’s in Cuba, Penelope’s
passed her exams.
RM Lydia’s in Cuba with
the good doctor (Stephen
Tob olowsk y) smoking his
cigar! When I read that, I was
so tickled. I can’t wait to see.
Q: Penelope said last
season that she’d be happy
alone. Will she date at all?
JM She’s gonna find love!
RM My guess is that Lydia
will flirt with her new man
because she’s ruthless.
JM It’s a package deal when
you come into this house.
You get Abuela and Mommy.
Q: What will be different on
Pop TV?
JM We’ll have seven to 10
minutes less per episode
because of commercials.
RM We’ll still have an
audience, which is important.
JM We’re still at Sony, but at
stage 28, not 25.
RM Maybe there’ll be less
dust. That’s my big concern.
JM That’s the stage where
they did Wizard of Oz, so
sometimes you wonder the
last time they cleaned.
What do you want
JM Openness, dialogue,
RM Norman Lear said to me
initially, “I want this to be
universal.” It happens to be
a Cuban family, which brings
to the attention of everyone
the Hispanic-ness of it,
the spiciness of it — but
the family problems come
with every family no matter
A
year ago, in March 20 1 9, the cast of One
Day at a Time was in shock. Netflix had
just pulled the plug on the critically ac-
claimed comedy revival and all hope
seemed lost. A month later, Pop TV came
to the rescue, greenlighting a fourth season
(March 2 4 , 9:30 p.m.). Now Rita Moreno and Justina
Machado, who play mother-daughter pair Lydia and
Penelope, can’t wait to see their show back on the air.
“On Netflix, we wouldn’t air until six months [after
taping], so we couldn’t be as topical,” says Machado
of their new home. Otherwise, fans can expect the
same smart, funny, important show they’ve come to
love. The actresses share more with Us.
