wasnotsuccessfulforeigninvasionsoftheUnitedStates.Distance,the
sea,andtheAmericanvictoryintheRevolutionallcounseledcouragein
thefaceofthatdanger.Rather,theyfearedwhattheeffortofcontinually
resisting invasion, or participating inforeign politics, woulddo to
Americandemocracy.Victory,evenuniversalglobalhegemony,wouldbe
a hollowprize.

atefloor tomakea lastattempttoblockratificationoftheVersailles
Treaty,includingU.S. membershipintheLeagueofNations:"When
youshallhavecommittedthisRepublictoa schemeofworldcontrol
baseduponforce...youwillhavesoondestroyedtheatmosphereoffree-
dom,ofconfidenceintheself-governingcapacityofthemasses,inwhich
alonea democracymaythrive....Andwhatshallitprofitusasa Nation
ifweshallgoforthtothedominationoftheearthandsharewithothers
thegloryofworldcontrolandlosethatfinesenseofconfidenceinthe
