lookingatthetaskswenowface,itseemstomethatthevoiceoftheJef-
fersonianschoolistheonethatcurrentlymostneedstobeheard.
JeffersoniansbelievethatthegreatestdangerfacingtheUnitedStates
istheconsequencesofinternationaloverreaching.Wecanpressourhege-
monytoofar;wecaninsisttoohardthatourprinciples,whetherWilson-
ianidealsorHamiltoniancommercialvalues,beuniversalizedintothe
practiceofothercountries.Ourpowercangrowsogreat,andouruseof
itseemsounpredictabletoothers,thatinself-defensetherestofthe
worldcanunitetolimitourpowerandperhapstoundermineoursecu-
rity.Jeffersonianswouldratherthatourpowerremainwithinlimitsthat
weAmericanschooseforourselvesthantofinditonedayconfinedwithin

Potentially,Jeffersonianshavetheabilitytodeterminethestrategic
futureoftheUnitedStatesformanyyearstocome.Ontheotherhand,
theymaysinkintocontinuingmarginalizationandirrelevance.
