gationofthewarhadnotfadedfromAmericanpoliticsbytheendofthe
centuryandposedoneofthemostseriousobstaclestoNixon'ssuccessors
astheysoughttocontinuetheColdWar.Similarlytheeconomicconse-
quencesofthecollapseofBrettonWoodsandthehastilyimprovisedway
inwhichtheywerehandledinflictedlastingdamageontheAmerican
economyandonU.S. relationswithbothWesternEuropeandJapan.
NixonandKissingersucceededwhereCharlesdeGaullehadfailed:On
thesubjectofmonetarypolicytheyunitedEuropeagainsttheUnited
States.FromthecollapseoftheBrettonWoodssystemtothepresentday,
Europeanshaveburiedalltheirdifferences,howeverbitter,andcooper-
atedtowingreatermonetaryindependencefromWashingtoningood
timesandbad.Theconsequencesofthechaoticcollapseofthesystem
spreadfarther.Theinflationarywavessetoffbythecurrencycrashledto
theoilpriceshocksandtheeconomicstagflationofthe197os,whichhad
massiveconsequencesforprivateinvestorsandfornationaleconomiesall
overtheworld,undermininggovernments,exacerbatingsocialconflicts,
andsettingthestageforsuchfurtherproblemsasthethird-worlddebt
crisisofthe1980s.
