Getting a leg up
Inle Lake, Burma (Myanmar)
Photographer: Alex Treadway
Reed beds and
loating plants make for
tricky navigation, but Burmese
ishermen
have the perfect solution to sculling the
waters of Inle Lake. Paddling past stilted
houses and water gardens on slender teak
canoes, they employ a distinctive rowing
style: they lock one leg around a long oar
and paddle while standing. From this
position they can look over the reeds,
tapping the hull of the boat to lure
ish
out into the open. Masters of their craft.
