there’s a willingness to do

● FIFA have cleared
the extension of
player contracts until
seasons are finished
and approved the
transfer window being
moved.

But players were last night still
adamant that they will not be
forced into taking wage cuts.
Most are willing to discuss
wage deferrals – as long as they
get a guarantee they will
eventually get the money back.
PFA chief executive Gordon
Taylor is backing that stance,
saying: “Players have often
deferred wages before and

Cancelling the season might suit
some but with the finishing line in
sight Doherty is adamant it shouldn’t
happen.
He added: “My opinion is that I
want to see the games out, of
course. It might be a different
story if we had 20 games
left. It would just be
impossible then,
but with having
nine games left you
could get through them
pretty quickly.
“So yes I would
rather finish the season
because I think there
would be too many
complications if you
were to end it right
now.
“There would be too
many problems for the
league to sort out, so the
best idea would be to
finish at some point.”

MATT DOHERTY says killing off the By Dave Armitage
season would be heartbreaking for
Wolves.
They are sixth in the Premier
League and chasing a Champions
League spot – and have reached the
knockout stages of the Europa
League.
Defender Doherty said: “If we
don’t get to finish the season it will
leave a sour taste.
“We’re on the cusp of another
really great one and the
possibilities are more than what
we had last season.
“Champions League football
is a possibility and we’re in the
knockout stages in Europe.
“It was becoming really
exciting for us – a real big
opportunity that we couldn’t
wait for. We were looking at the
fixtures and couldn’t wait to
play the games.”
It’s been a meteoric rise for
Nuno Espirito Santo’s men
after being promoted only
two years ago. They were
seventh in their first
season back in the top
flight – and now this.

having made the Bulgarian a
star during his time there.
But as well as winning two
titles at United, Berbatov
reached the Champions League
final in 2009. He also clinched
the 2010-11 Golden Boot.
Berbatov told Betfair: “When
I left Spurs it was a difficult
decision to make.
“I was following my own path
and I knew people wouldn’t be
happy, but I had to do it. I come
from a small country and when
one of the biggest clubs in the
world came in for me, it was my
dream.
“There is a strong connection
between Spurs and United –

struggling for form and
consistency in the race for a top-
four place when the season was
suspended.
Kane has four years left on
the £200,000-a-week deal he
signed in 2018 but that has not
stopped some of the biggest
clubs being interested.
Nor did it stop the Chingford-
born marksman from admitting
for the first time last week he
could leave if his club did not
start winning trophies.
Kane said: “I love Spurs, I’d
always love Spurs, but it’s one
of those things. I’ve always said
if I don’t feel progression in the
team then I’m not someone to
stay there for the sake of it.
“I’m an ambitious player, I
want to improve, I want to get
better. I want to become one of
the top, top players.
“It all depends what happens
with the team and how we
progress. So it’s not a
definite I’m going to
stay there forever, but
it’s not a no either.”

FOOTBALL: KANE URGED TO QUIT TOTTENHAM

HARRY KANE has been urged
to put himself ahead of
Tottenham if Manchester
United come calling this
summer.
The plea has come from
Dimitar Berbatov, above, who
quit Spurs for United in 2008.
Berbatov duly clinched two
Premier League titles in four
years at United and believes
Kane will satisfy his lust for
silverware by making the same
move.
“I see a lot of similarities with
what is happening with Kane,”
said the Bulgarian.
“I feel it’s a similar time in his
career to where I was when I
made the move. You start to
question if you’re on the right
path and you think about
winning things.”
United are among a number
of clubs with a long-standing
interest in Kane, who despite
being injured in January still
scored 27 goals in 31
appearances for club
and country.
