Australia’s own ‘International Magician of the Year’
How did you get into magic and
what attracted you to it?
I started magic when I was 12. I
was a very shy boy who had
low self-esteem. I didn’t learn
to read until I was about
12 years old. My mother is a
school principal and she took
me to the library and she was
trying to encourage me to read
and I came across a book that
had beautiful pictures in it.
My mother saw me with the
book open so we took the
book home and she read it
to me and she also
read the magic tricks
that were in the
back of the
book. Through
that process
I learnt to
read, write
and spell
and that’s
also how
I learnt
my first
magic!
How did
you learn
the magic
tricks? Did
you teach
yourself or did
someone teach you?
My mother actually taught me
the magic! She read me the
instructions from the back of
the book and then I practiced in
my room over and over again. I
showed my father my very first
trick which was making a coin
disappear and he was blown
away by it and he didn’t know
how I did it. I then became
obsessed with magic. I couldn’t
show my mother because she
knew how the trick worked. She
taught me the trick! So my Dad
is an engineer, so a really smart
guy so I was really nervous
showing him the trick. I took
the twenty cent coin and with a
little bit of the slide of my hand
the coin vanished and my Dad
said to me, ‘How did you do
it?’ I didn’t tell him but all of a
sudden there was a huge rush
that came over me that I could
do something that my Dad
couldn’t do. I mean, dads can
do everything, but I could do
something that my Dad couldn’t
do that was really special. So
that made me obsessed with
magic and I went back to the
library and borrowed more
magic books.

your tricks or are you happy
to explain how they work if
