(^50) FREAK OUT
BUG JEWELLERY
PENNY FLOOR
Now here’s an example of thinking outside
the box. Or should that be outside the purse?
Instead of using tiles for the bathroom floor,
some interior designer wannabe decided
to use thousands of pennies instead. Only
problem is it takes ages to glue thousands
and thousands of coins to a floor. Good luck
convincing your mates to help you.
Caddisfly larvae are clever little creatures.
The architects of the insect world, they build
protective cases using stuff like gravel,
twigs and small pieces of shell. This gave one
jewellery maker the bright idea of putting
gold, pearls and semi-precious stones in their
path to see what would happen. Jackpot! The
larvae did their thing and spun the materials
into beautiful jewel-encrusted cases. Some
say it’s pure genius. Others say it’s just plain
freaky. We reckon it’s both.
