“THE SECRET TO SO MANY ARTISTS

LIVING SO LONG IS THAT EVERY

PAINTING IS A NEW ADVENTURE. SO,

YOU SEE, THEY’RE ALWAYS LOOKING

AHEAD TO SOMETHING NEW AND

EXCITING. THE SECRET IS NOT TO

LOOK BACK” – NORMAN ROCKWELL

BOOK OF THE MONTH
Unquiet Landscape by Christopher Neve
When plans were made to publish a new
edition of this 1990 lost classic, little did
anyone know quite how timely it would be.
Former Country Life art critic
Christopher Neve goes in search of
20th-century English landscape paintings
that were not so much topographically
accurate, but rather attempts to map out
the artist’s state of mind.
Inspired by his conversations with Ben
Nicholson, Neve also discusses the work
and creative processes of Eric Ravilious,
Joan Eardley and more. While we’re all
stuckindoors,thisis a splendidreminder
f h art e imaginationwilltravel.

ASTER TIP PAUL GAUGUIN
inting techniques of the
orld’s best artists
hough often paired with the likes
Monet and Degas, as in the Royal
ademy’s current Gauguin and the
mpressionists exhibition, Paul
auguin’s application of paint was
evertheless very different. He moved
away from the use of small dabbed
strokes of oil paint and instead favoured
arge fl at areas of colour.
Gauguin apparently experimented

with adding wax to his oil paints to make
them smoother, applying the colour in
thin layers that allowed the coarse
texture of his canvases to show through.
The areas of colour taper out at the
edges and the artist uses earthy reds
and dark blues to emphasise the
outlines of his subject, such as 1896’s
Portrait of a Young Girl (Vaïte ‘Jeanne’
Goupil) [above].
Gauguin and the Impressionists runs until
14 June at Royal Academy of Arts, London
