nature as her biggest teacher. Yet despite this, the artist
recognises an almost symbiotic relationship between
painting en plein air and painting in the studio.
“When you’re outside, you’ve got a little bit more
permission to go away from where you thought you were
going. Whereas in the studio there’s more of a ringmaster
trying to drag you to succeed, so it feels a bit tighter. But
when you get deep into the painting, it becomes the same
and they of course help each other. All the work you do in
the studio helps when you go out again, and vice versa.”
It’s obvious these big, bold landscapes are a huge
source of inspiration for Margaret, but it’s not the only
force driving her creativity. For one thing, her repertoire
