PAINT AT HOME

1

Start by drawing a frame. Fill the
whole page or create a format of
your choice. It need not match your
window. Don’t neglect this stage, it
really helps scale different objects.

2

Ask yourself how far you are
going to pull back. Do you want
to solely look at the view outside? Or
do you want to include the window?
If you include the window, do that
first. Then start laying in the shapes
of the largest objects in the scene.

3

Start drawing the scene, working
your way from nearby subjects to
more distant ones. This usually
involves working up from the bottom,

and from the edges of your drawing
into the middle. Adjust the size and
shape of elements in the centre to
suit your drawing.

4

Continue to work further into the
scene and block in the clouds.
It can help to draw the sky earlier,
as it is often the lightest tonal area.
Establishing that value helps with
making comparisons to other light
objects, such as white buildings.

5

Keep building up detail as much
as you like. If you’ve worked from
large shapes to small details, you’ll
be surprised how little it matters if
you miss the odd window or tree.
