2022 Lincoln Mark E

WHAT IT IS A powerful and posh electric SUV
sold by a 102-year-old brand but built by
Rivian, an 11-year-old startup. The name is still
to be determined, but clearly there’s heritage
to be appropriated with Mark E.
WHY IT MATTERS Think of this project as a
sneak preview of automaker tie-ups and
vehicle development in the future. As electric
powertrains become a commodity, the
temptation to share mechanical components
across brands and companies will be even
greater than it is today.
PLATFORM Ford recently invested $500 million
in Rivian, buying access to the startup’s
skateboard architecture in the process. We
know that the platform supports air springs
and hydraulic roll control similar to the system
in the McLaren 720S. The lithium-ion battery
pack should be available in multiple capacities
as well.
POWERTRAIN Like Rivian’s top-of-the-line SUV,
the most expensive Mark E likely will have an
electric motor dedicated to each wheel with
combined output exceeding 700 horsepower.
We speculate that Lincoln will offer a dual-
motor setup with longer range, too.
COMPETITION Audi e-tron, Cadillac Lyriq,
Jaguar I-Pace, Rivian R1S, Tesla Model X.
WHAT MIGHT GO WRONG The R1S might end up
being the more compelling vehicle.
ESTIMATED ARRIVAL AND PRICE It should arrive in
2022, starting around $70,000.

2021 Genesis GV80

WHAT IT IS The SUV that could
finally stick the Genesis brand
name in the minds of well-heeled
American drivers. Designers gave
the mid-size ute an imposing
presence and a posh cabin that
are hard to ignore.
WHY IT MATTERS The GV80 is a
harbinger of things to come for
the fledgling Korean luxury
brand. It introduces a pair of
turbo engines that will proliferate
throughout the lineup, and it
paves the way for the smaller
GV70 SUV that should follow
about a year behind. Most import-
ant, it lays out a vision for Genesis
vehicles that sell on emotion
rather than value.
