Before beginning the exercises, make sure
you’ve downloaded the lesson files from
http://www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5,
as directed in Step 2 on page xvi of the
Preface. This means you should have a
folder called Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1 on
your desktop (or whatever location you
chose). We’ll be working with the files in-
side the Lesson 04 subfolder.

The exercises in this lesson explain how to use Photoshop’s paint,
edit, and healing tools to brush color and effects onto an image.
You’ll learn how to:


  • Retouch a face using the dodge, burn,
    sponge,and red-eye tools............... page 95

Project files


Many of Photoshop’s paint, edit, and healing tools
rely on a common group of options and settings that
Adobe calls the brush engine. These options include
such elements of brushstroke behavior as size, hard-
ness, roundness, angle, pressure-sensitive taper, and
bristle type. Photoshop CS5 introduces some amaz-
ing brush features, like the new Mixer brush tool,
which allows you to combine colors in your image
to mimic real-life painting.
