Adobe Photoshop CS5 One-on-One

We’ve now seen all but one of the edit tools that I mentioned at
the outset of this exercise. The remaining tool fixes red eye. If you
don’t care about red eye and you’ve had enough of editing, skip to
“Healing and Patching,” which begins on page 104. To learn how
to fix yellow teeth, miscolored details, and red eyes, stick with me.

  1. Turn on the top layer in the image. Go to the Layers
panel. Click the layer titled Teeth & Red Eye to make
it active. Then click the empty box to the left to reveal
the along with the contents of the layer. Another
view of Hannah, this image exhibits such defects as
yellowish teeth, greenish hair highlights, and red eye,
    as seen in Figure 4-14.

As you saw in the previous shot, Hannah has a lovely smile. The
enhancement of the yellowing in this image is a function of the
way I developed the photo in Camera Raw. And the red pupils
were imported from another image. Red eye is caused by the
flash entering the pupil, illuminating the red tissue inside the eye,
and reflecting back into your camera’s lens element. Red eye is
common when using a built-in flash on an inexpensive camera,
but it’s rare when using professional lighting equipment, as Stellar
did. Are you thinking, “Unfair! You can’t give us fake red eye.”? No.
Unfair would have been to add red pupils and not own up. This is
real red eye, just from another image. Your treatment of it will be
the same as when treating red eye in your own photos.

  1. Set the Mode to Desaturate. It’s tempting to attack yel-
low teeth with the dodge tool. But the trick to bleach-
ing stained teeth is to remove their saturation. So with
the sponge tool still selected, change the Mode setting
in the options bar to Desaturate.

  2. Paint the teeth. Reduce the brush size to 20 pixels and
press the 3 key to increase Flow to 30 percent. Then
paint very carefully inside the teeth. The reason I say
“very carefully” is because you don’t want to desatu-
rate the gums. That would make them appear dead
and lifeless, which won’t help the smile any. It took
me about eight brushstrokes to get the effect I wanted.

  3. Brighten the teeth. Press the O key to select the dodge
tool. Set Range to Midtones, Exposure to 30 percent,
and the brush diameter to 60 pixels. Then paint across
the smile to brighten it, as in Figure 4-46.
