- Use the history brush to restore the transitions. Although
Photoshop does a miraculous job of healing our pirate’s scar,
the area along her check and jaw line have lost some of their
original shadow detail and her earring has been erroneously
duplicated. As we’ve seen, we can paint back the detail from
an earlier state of the image.
Press the Y key to select the history brush. Set the brush size to
100 pixels. Then, in the History panel, make sure your source
is still set to the original Patchy.tif state. Paint back along the
side of her face to restore those edge transitions, as shown
in Figure 4-39. Be careful at the edge to avoid restoring red
splotches from the scar. Also carefully brush back in the areas
above and below the scar to retain as much original informa-
tion as possible.

If you do go too far with the history brush
restoration, you can always return to your healed
state by selecting the last Healing Brush option
in your History panel, and then painting back the
healed information. Don’t forget that you can also
use the dodge and burn tools to retouch areas
that may end up too light or dark after healing.
