- Fill in the shadows with black. Although you might think that
filling the shadows requires painting or selecting, it doesn’t.
The approach is a bit more technical, but it’s also vastly more
automated. Create another layer, name it “Solid Black,” and
this time fill it with black by pressing Alt+Backspace (Option-
Delete). The result is an entirely black image, but we’ll fix that
in the next step. - Adjust the layer style for the Solid Black layer. Double-click
to the right of the Solid Black layer’s name in the Layers panel
to display the Layer Style dialog box. Go down to the last slider
bar, which is labeled Underlying Layer. Drag the white triangle
to the left to a value of 160 to force through the lightest colors in
the underlying layers, meaning that the black covers brightness
levels of 160 and darker. The result appears in Figure 4-47. Click
OK to exit the dialog box.
