Before beginning the exercises, make sure
you’ve downloaded the lesson files from
http://www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5,
as directed in Step 2 on page xvi of the
Preface. This means you should have a
folder called Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1 on
your desktop (or whatever location you
chose). We’ll be working with the files in-
side the Lesson 05 subfolder.

This lesson examines the amazing power of using Photoshop layers
to isolate and manipulate parts of your image. You will learn how to:

  • Edit layers and move them forward and backward .page 132

  • Add layers to an image, as well as duplicate,
    scale, and reposition................ .page 144

  • Use masks, blending, and knockouts to alter
the appearance of a layer nondestructively..... .page 157

  • Save the visibility, position, and appearance
of layers using layer comps............. .page 169

Layers just might be the most powerful feature in all of
Photoshop. Layers allow you to stack images on top of
each other, apply settings to independent parts of your
image, blend layers together for effects, clip one layer
to another to limit effects, and more. And often you
can do this with no destruction to your original image.
In this video, I’ll show you how to turn a regular woman
into an otherworldly creature.
