Adding a Background layer is a two-step process:
- Click the icon at the bottom of the Layers panel to create
a new layer (which will land above our currently selected
Glass 1 layer). - Then from the Layer menu, choose New→Background
from Layer (which will move the new layer to the bottom
of the layer stack).
The new Background layer will automatically fill with white
(the current background color), and the transparency grid in
the image will disappear because we’ll be seeing through to the
white background, as witnessed in Figure 5-9.
The transparency grid is now
better contrasted with the white
background in the Glass 1 image
The white Background layer is
visible through the transparent area
of the Glass 1 layer

- Turn on the guidelines. Photoshop gives you the ability to lay
nonprinting guidelines over your image so that you can pre-
cisely position elements in your composition. To turn on the
guidelines, and see the guides I’ve already established for later
use, choose View→Show→Guides.
