Adobe Photoshop CS5 One-on-One

(やまだぃちぅ) #1
Figure 5-26.

  1. Add the Stars layer. Open the Stars.psd file in the
    Lesson 05 folder inside Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1. We’re
going to import this field of stars into our composition,
using a technique we first saw in Lesson 3. Press the V key to
get the move tool. Press Ctrl+A (-A) to select the entire image,
and then Shift-drag the stars image onto your working compo-
sition image. Since the Martini Hour layer was active (from the
preceding step), the new layer drops into place above it, block-
ing the logo. Drag the new layer down below the Martini Hour
layer. Then double-click the layer name and change it to “Stars.”

I’ll show you how to make your own stars file, as well as a host of
other handy or just plain trippy patterns, when you get to Lesson 7
and “Making a Magical Pattern-Generating Smart Filters File.”

If you’re in the tabbed view, Shift-drag the Stars image up to the tab for
Colored Stemware.psd (or My Colored Stemware.psd if you’re continuing
from the last exercise), wait a moment for it to open, and then release
the stars into the composition.

  1. Drop out the black background of the Stars layer. Although we
do want a black background, the one provided with the Stars
layer is blocking our view of the martini glasses. In the Layers
panel, change the blend mode of the Stars layer to Screen. The
Screen blend mode handily makes visible only the lightest ele-
ment of the layer—the stars. The black background drops away.
You should now be able to see the martini glasses boldly going
where no cocktail has gone before, as in Figure 5-27 on the
    next page.
