- Add a layer effect to the Martini Hour logo. Another benefit of
working in layers is the ability to apply layer effects to specific
parts of your composition. As the name implies, layer effects
are special effects you apply on a layer-by-layer basis. The two
text layers I created for you already have effects applied, as indi-
cated by the icon to the right of their respective layer names.
If you click the to the right edge of either of those layers, you
reveal the effects (in both cases, a drop shadow).
To make the logo pop out from its busy background, I want to
add to the logo some layer effect s— specifically , a drop shadow
and a stroke. Start by clicking the Martini Hour layer to select it.
Then click the icon at the bottom of the Layers panel and
choose Drop Shadow, as shown in Figure 5-39. - Choose the settings for the drop shadow effect. You can adjust
your effects in a variety of ways from the Layer Style dialog box.
For this image, do the following:
Figure 5-39.
Figure 5-40.
- Turn on the Preview check box so
you can watch the effect take place
as you make changes. - Confirm that the Blend Mode is set
to Multiply. - Click the swatch to the right of Blend
Mode to bring up the Select Shadow
Color color picker window. Set a
dark purple similar to the one we
used for the gradient in Step 15 by
entering H: 285, S:3 0, B: 25. Click
OK to dismiss the color picker. - Back in the Layer Style dialog box,
increase the Opacity to 100 percent. - Set the Distance slider, which con-
trols how much the shadow is offset
from its object, to 14 pixels. - Set the Size slider to 16 pixels.
For the moment, your Layer Style di-
alog box should look like the one in
Figure 5-40. Don’t click OK just yet.
We’re going to add another effect while
we’re here.
