Before beginning the exercises, make sure
you’ve downloaded the lesson files from
http://www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5,
as directed in Step 2 on page xvi of the
Preface. This means you should have a
folder called Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1 on
your desktop (or whatever location you
chose). We’ll be working with the files in-
side the Lesson 07 subfolder.

In this lesson, I explain the intricacies of Photoshop’s most useful
filters and how to use smart objects to apply effects nondestruc-
tively. You’ll learn how to:

  • Amplify the edge detail in an image using
the Smart Sharpen filter............... .page 220

  • Sharpen an image with High Pass.......... .page 224

  • Maximize the flexible power of smart objects... .page 227

  • Use smart filters to apply effects nondestructively. .page 236

  • Create unlimited new patterns with smart filters... .page 251

In a program that seems to pride itself on its crowded
menus, Photoshop’s Filter menu is the most jam-
packed of them all. Its commands (known generically
as filters) range from extremely practical to wonder-
fully frivolous to just plain lame. We’re not going to
look at all the filters—that would be pointless—just
the best ones. We’ll get a sense for how they work as
well as how to adjust their results
