Click OK to accept your changes. To get a sense of the way in
which the Median effect smooths over and lightens the pores and
other harsh, dark edges, click the icon in front of Median in
the Layers panel to turn it off and on. Or check out Figure 7-31,
which shows the two versions of the image side-by-side.

Now I want you to add another pass of sharpening to achieve a
heightened contrast effect. I could apply the Smart Sharpen command
again, but if I did, I’d get another Smart Sharpen entry in the Layers
panel, and telling one Smart Sharpen from another could prove
confusing. So better to apply a different filter, one just as suited to
enhancing the contrast of an image: High Pass.


  1. Apply the third filter, High Pass. Choose Filter→Other→High
    Pass. In the High Pass dialog box, enter a Radius value of 75
    pixels and click OK. As shown in Figure 7-32 on the facing
    page, the image looks unnaturally gray; we’ll solve that prob-
    lem shortly.
