- Refine the mask. In the Layers panel, click the layer
mask to make it active. Then right-click and choose
Refine Mask from the context menu. Alternately,
you can press Ctrl+Alt+R (-Option-R). You’ll be
presented with the Refine Mask dialog box pictured
in Figure 10-47. - Increase the Radius. In the Edge Detection section
of the Refine Mask dialog box, set the Radius to 8
pixels. This defines the area into which the Refine
Mask can work its automatic luminance detection.
The bigger the radius, the more radical the effect.
Turn on the Smart Radius check box. Smart Radius
contracts the edge radius around smooth areas (like
arms) and leaves the rough areas of your mask at
your maximum value (in this case, 8). To see the
edges Photoshop is working with (as in the figure),
turn on the Show Radius check box at the top of
the dialog box. - Click OK. When you click OK, Photoshop calcu-
lates its automatic improvement to your mask edges.
The improved results, and satisfying finale to our
three-exercise excursion, are revealed at long last
in Figure 10-48.
