Adobe Photoshop CS5 One-on-One

(やまだぃちぅ) #1

  1. Select and show the Body Copy layer. Click the Body Copy
layer in the Layers panel and then turn on its to make it vis-
ible. This layer contains a paragraph of type set in the world’s
ugliest font, Courier New. (For you, it may appear in some other
Courier derivative, but rest assured, they’re all dreadful.) The
only reason the layer is here is to spare you the tedium of hav-
ing to enter the type from scratch. But that doesn’t mean there’s
nothing for you to do. Much formatting is in order.

This particular variety of text layer is called area text. To create such a
layer, drag with the type tool to define the bounding box around the
area text, also known as a text block. As you enter text, Photoshop wraps
words down to the next line as needed to fit inside the block.

  1. Assign a better font. As long as a text layer is active, you can
format all type on that layer by adjusting settings in the options
bar or Character panel. For starters, click the word Courier in
either location. This highlights the font name and provides you
    with a couple of options:

    • Press the or key to cycle to a previous or subsequent
font in alphabetical order. This permits you to preview the
various fonts installed on your system, handy if you have no
idea what fonts like Giddyup or Greymantle look like. (Those
are just examples; your strange fonts will vary.)

    • Enter the first few letters of the font you’d like to use.
