Adobe Photoshop CS5 One-on-One

(やまだぃちぅ) #1

  1. Turn on all Compatibility check boxes. Just because you’re
working on a Mac today doesn’t mean you won’t be using a
UNIX box tomorrow. (Well, in a way, you already are, but
that’s another story.) And the 95 percent of you folks who use
Windows may come to love your iPhone so much that you’ll
decide to switch over to Apple technology. All I know is, it’s a
cross-platform world and you might as well be ready for any-
thing that comes your way. The Compatibility boxes (seen at
the bottom of Figure 1-37) ensure that your filenames subscribe
to the naming conventions of other operating systems. You’ll
see that one check box is dimmed (the check box for your op-
erating system) and the other two are available. Turn on both
    available check boxes.

  2. Copy the original filename to the metadata. Turn on the Pre-
serve Current Filename in XMP Metadata check box to store the
filename assigned by the digital camera with the metadata for
each file. It’s a good precaution in case you ever need to match
an edited image to its source. The old filename will be listed
in the File Properties area of the Metadata panel as a property
    called Preserved Filename.

  1. Rename the images. When your settings match those pictured
in Figure 1-37, click the Rename button to send the Bridge on
    its merry batch-renaming way.

You’ll notice at the top of the Batch Rename
dialog box that you can save your renaming
scheme as a preset to use later. I suppose there are
situations where you may reuse the exact same
set of naming parameters on an ongoing basis.
But it seems to me if I ever do another mural on
Max’s wall again, I can recreate this scenario fairly
easily. The preset does save all your other choices
(where you want the files to end up, compatibility,
preserving the current filename in the metadata),
so if you think it could be useful, by all means click
the Save button and give this renaming scenario
a suitable name. Next time you evoke this dialog
box, you’ll be able to choose that set of settings
from the Preset pop-up menu.
