Before beginning the exercises, make sure
you’ve downloaded the lesson files from
http://www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5,
as directed in Step 2 on page xvi of the
Preface. This means you should have a
folder called Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1 on
your desktop (or whatever location you
chose). We’ll be working with the files in-
side the Lesson 02 subfolder.

In this lesson, we explore ways to crop, straighten, and resize digital
photographs using a small but essential collection of tools and com-
mands. You’ll learn how to:

  • Quickly straighten the horizon of an image..... page 42

  • Use the crop tool to straighten an image and
crop extraneous background information...... page 46

  • Adjust the resolution of an image and select
the best interpolation setting............. page 55

  • Determine the dimensions for a print........ page 58

video lesson 2: navigation

Navigation is about moving around inside an image:
magnifying part of a photo so you can do detail work,
panning to the area you want to modify, even stepping
back and taking in the whole thing. Some of the best
techniques covered in this video depend on OpenGL.
(The OpenGL-dependent shortcuts are marked with
*
.)
To see how to navigate naturally in Photoshop, visit http://www.

button to view the lesson online or click the Download
button to save it to your computer. During the video,
