In the status bar, Doc: 18.0M/18.0M refers to the size of the image, as
measured in megabytes, in your computer’s memory. (The size of the file
on disk is usually smaller, thanks to compression.) The value before the
slash is the flat version of the file; the value after the slash includes layers.
Because this is a flat image, both values are the same. To change the kind of
information displayed in the status bar, click the ▶ to the right of the Doc
item, and then choose an option from the pop-up menu.

  1. Magnify the image to the 100 percent zoom ratio. Press Ctrl+1
(-1 on the Mac). Then scroll around until you can see the
clipboard and script. Pictured in Figure 2-30, the text is suffi-
ciently legible that you can read every word, save those covered
by Colleen’s hand (thus suggesting that “101 Photoshop Tips
in 5 Minutes” might not have been an extemporaneous rant).
    4. Determine how many pixels you need. Because
resampling amounts to rewriting every pixel in your
image, it’s a good idea to map out a strategy before
    you plow ahead.
For example, let’s say you want to email this image
to a couple of friends. Surely your friends can print
    the image smaller than 6^5 ⁄ 6 by 10^1 ⁄ 4 inches. In fact,
in all likelihood, they won’t print it at all; they’ll
just view it on the screen. A typical high-resolution
monitor can display 1600 by 1200 pixels, a mere 30
percent of the pixels in this photo. So the photo will
be automatically downsized by whatever software
your friends use to view it, possibly in ways that
    make the image look awful.

Also worth noting, pixels come at a price. Lots of pixels consume
lots of space in memory and on your hard drive, plus they take
longer to transmit over the Internet. If you were to email this
JPEG file, as is, over a typical suburban DSL or cable modem
connection, it could take as long as a minute to send and 30
seconds to receive. Those times grow exponentially in rural
areas. Most Internet users aren’t interested in spending that
kind of time on still images, not even ones of Colleen.

Conclusion: Resampling is warranted. This is a job
for Image Size.
