Before beginning the exercises, make sure
you’ve downloaded the lesson files from
http://www.oreilly.com/go/Deke-PhotoshopCS5,
as directed in Step 2 on page xvi of the
Preface. This means you should have a
folder called Lesson Files-PsCS5 1on1 on
your desktop (or whatever location you
chose). We’ll be working with the files in-
side the Lesson 03 subfolder.

This lesson examines ways to select a region of an image and edit
it independently of another region using Photoshop’s magic wand,
quick selection, lasso, and marquee tools as well as a few commands
in the Select menu. You’ll learn how to:

  • Isolate an image with an irregular shape....... page 66

  • Make selections based on color value........ page 74

  • Extract a problematic element with a
combination of selection tools............ page 80

  • Understand the mercurial magnetic lasso tool.... page 83

Photoshop’s selection tools rank among the program’s most
fundamental capabilities. Simply put, unless you want to
apply an operation to an entire image or layer, you have to
first define the area that you want to affect with a selec-
tion tool. In this video lesson, you’ll see a range of selection
tools employed to move a model from one background to an-
other—from the straightforward marquees and flexible lasso
tools to the edge-detecting magic wand and quick selection
tools. Then we’ll finish with the fine-tuning refine edge com-
mand.
