Japanese attaché had no assistant, and he continued to make these trips
personally. He eventually became the champion tunnel visitor with over fifty
trips, a record that probably still holds to this day.
My experiences under Ambassador Lilley reflected the myriad duties car-
ried out by high-level embassy officials. My activities in the lead up to the
presidential election and the Seoul Olympics were among the
most important of my career with the U.S. government, ones that I recall
with pride and satisfaction. Those involving the provision of services for
visiting VIPs, however, are remembered with cynicism or humor, depend-
ing on my state of mind at any given time.
