will always tell another officer the truth. This rule is unbreakable. In battle,
if an officer states his position falsely, he directly endangers the lives of his
men and his comrades. Therefore, this unauthorized and unprofessional
action by Chun Doo Hwan and his followers caused a rift that was difficult
to heal for a long time. Americans felt that Chun and his followers had be-
trayed our trust. This would unfortunately dominate our bilateral military
relationship in the crucial days ahead.
