242 NOTES

  1. Major General Sir James Outram outranked Brigadier General Havelock at the time
but had voluntarily subordinated himself to the latter for the relief of Lucknow. This
accounts for the seeming contradiction of ranks in Havelock’s quoted report. According
to the 1911Encyclopedia Britannica, Outram’s own men nominated him for the VC for his
actions in the battle, which he declined on the grounds that it would not be proper
for him to accept it as the general under whom they served.
