Tallinn 1

Founded by the Danes at the beginning of the 13th century,
Tallinn was for ages known by its Teutonic name, Reval.
The city flourished in the 14th and 15th centuries, when it
was one of the leading members of the powerful Hanseatic
League. The brilliantly restored Old Town, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site since 1991, is a living monument to this golden
period of Tallinn’s history. The vast majority of sights in
the city are concentrated in and around Town Hall Square
(Raekoja plats) and Toompea, in the medieval Old Town.
Its winding cobbled streets are dot ted with elegant back
alleys, courtyards and spired churches, as well as fas cinating
museums that present the city’s historic and cultural
traditions. An architectural wonder, Tallinn has grown
into a dynamic, chic and exciting city over the years, with
a population of about four hundred thousand people.
