Set in the centre of the Main
Market Square, the Cloth Hall
replaced an earlier Gothic
trade hall dating from the
late 14th century. Destroyed
in a fire then rebuilt by
Giovanni Maria Padovano, it
owes part of its present app e-
arance to Tomasz Pryliński’s
Romantic-style restoration
between 1875 and 1879.
Today, the ground floor is
filled with a selection of
souvenir shops and cafés.
The Musuem of 19th Century
Art, a branch of the National
Museum, is located on the
upper floor. It has a collec-
tion of 19th-cen tury paint -
ings by renowned artists,
including Jan Matejko and
Henryk Siemiradzki.

in the 14th century and pulled
down in the 19th cen tury.
Today, it houses a branch of
the Historical Museum.
Aspects of the city’s history
can be seen in the Museum
of the History of the Market,
in the crypt of the neigh-
bouring St Adalbert’s Church.

This charming street in the
Old Town is full of restaurants,
cafés and shops. It leads from
the Main Market Square to the
Florian Gate and was once
part of the Royal Route, along
which rulers would ride on
their way from Warsaw to
their coronation in Cracow.
Matejko House (Dom
Matejki), at No. 41, is the
birth place of the painter
Jan Matejko. He spent most
of his life here. On display
is a col lection of his paint-
ings and his studio, full of
artist’s materials.
A little further on, at No. 45,
is Jama Michalika, a café that
was very fashionable in the
late 19th to early 20th centu-
ries. The fine Art Nouveau
decor by Karol Frycz can still
be seen. The Florian Gate at
the end of the street is one
of the few surviv ing remnants
of the city’s medieval forti-
fications, along with a section
of the city wall.
