Musicals, opera and ballet
can provide the best form
of enter tainment even for
those who do not speak
Polish. Operettas and
musicals are performed at
Opera i Operetka in Cracow
and at Roma in Warsaw. For
opera-lovers, the productions
of the Great Theatre (Teatr
Wielki) in Warsaw are


FESTIVALS

Poland hosts several local
and international festivals.
A major theatre festival is
the Malta International
Drama Festival, held from late
June to early July in the
streets and theatres of
Poznań. In Warsaw, the
Garden Theatres Competition
runs throughout the summer.
Opera festivals, such as the
Mozart Festival in Warsaw,
and Poznan’s ballet festivals
are also popular. For those
interested in religious music,
the Wratislava Cantans are
held in September in
Wrocław. Jazz festivals are
also quite renowned in
Poland and major events
include the Warsaw Jazz
Jamboree, Jazz on the Oder
in Wrocław (May) and Jazz
All Souls’ Day in Cracow
(early November).

CLASSICAL AND
FOLK MUSIC

There are over 20 classical
orchestras in Poland and
they perform in almost all
of its big cities. Particularly
renowned are the National
Philharmonic Orchestra
(Filhar monia Narodowa)
in Warsaw, the Filharmonia
Baltycka in Gdańsk and the
Poznań Philharmonia, which
performs in the University
Hall. Classical music shows
are held in museums, churches
and palaces through out the
year. In the rest of the coun-
try, many bands perform the
traditional folk music of indi-
vidual regions, but it can be
difficult to track down their
concerts. The best chance
of seeing them is at various
music festivals in the summer.
