P Prague Bridge
The 60-m (200-ft) long
bridge (Pražskỳ most) was
designed by Jan Kotěra in


  1. It replaced the oldest
    bridge in Hradec Králové,
    dating from 1796. Between
    1910 and 1912, Kotěra added
    four pavilions to house shops.
    The architect also gave it
    distinctive fairy lighting and
    masts with the town’s
    emblem. The bridge leads
    into the section of the New
    Town across the Labe.

This distinctive building
(synagoga) has a magnificent
dome overlaid with sheet
copper. It was completed in
1905 to a design by Václav
Weinzettel, in the Art Nouveau
style, with some Oriental ele-
ments. Apart from the prayer
hall it also included the
domes tic quarters of the
rabbi, the shammash and the
caretaker; there was also a


meeting room and space for
the archives. The building
served the Jewish community
until World War II. After 1960
it was acquired and renovated
by the Hradec Králové
Research Library, and it
remains a library today.

The building of East Bohemia’s
Regional Museum (Krajské
muzeum východních Čech)
is one of the prime examples
of Bohemian Modernism.
It was built between 1909
and 1912 to a design by Jan
Kotěra. Inside, are some
interesting exhibits – in parti-
cular, a scale model of the
town from 1865, complete
with all of its fortifications.
