P Mill Spring Colonnade
Mlýnské nabřeží.
Built between 1871 and
1881 by architect Josef Zítek,
creator of the National Theatre
(see p259) in Prague, the Mill
Spring Colonnade (Mlýnská
kolonáda) is the largest of
the town’s colonnades, and
one of its most opulent.
The Neo-Renaissance gallery,
132-m (430-ft) long and
13-m (43-ft) wide, has a cof-
fered ceiling resting on 124
columns with Corinthian capi-
tals. Inside are five springs,
with water temperature
exceed ing 50º C (120º F).
Statues at each end represent
the 12 months of the year.

(Sadová kolonáda), a beauti-
ful painted wrought-iron
structure made of columns
R Church of Sts Peter
and Paul
Krále jiřiho. # 10am–5pm daily.
This church (Kostel sv Petra a
Pavela) was built between
1893 and 1897 by architect
G Wiedermann, and is among
the world’s largest Russian
Orthodox churches. It was
built for the Russian aristo c-
racy, who flocked to Karlovy
Vary in the 19th cen tury.

Behind the Grand Hotel Pupp
(see p291), at the southern
end of Stará Louka, is the
lower station of the funicular,
which runs to the top of the
Hill of Friendship. Built in
1912, the funicular rises
167 m (550 ft). At the top
is the Diana Viewpoint
(rozhledna Diana), providing
a great view over the resort.
decorated with sculptures,
terminating in two pavilions.
The colonnade was designed
by Ferdinand Fellner and
Hermann Helmer between
1880 and 1881. It is located in
the Dvořákovy sady gardens.
