Traditional peasant culture was all but
destroyed in the 20th century, but folk
songs and dances still survive.
Musically, the country has produced
several famous composers, including
Franz Liszt and Béla Bartók, while in
literature, powerful voices include Tibor
Déry and István Örkény. Hungary is
also known for its beer and meat-based
dishes, the latter spiced with paprika,
the country’s most famous export.
