officially a cathedral. Built
between 1756 and 1764, it is
a sub lime mix of Baroque and
Rococo styles, its clock tower
topped by a tall spire. Inside,
it contains icons of Orthodox
saints by Vasili Ostoic and a
red marble altar.
In the garden outside the
church, the Museum of
Serbian Orthodox Ecclesiastical
Art has around 2,000 icons,
vest ments, treasures and art
objects brought here in the
last 150 years after the clo sure
of their original host churches.

Winding its way north from
Fő Square, Bogdányi utca is a
lively thoroughfare lined with
historical buildings, and
packed with many shops,
stalls and portrait painters.
The Imre Ámos/Margit
Anna Museum at No. 10
com memorates the life and
works of well-known
painters Imre Ámos
and Margit Anna,
who married in
1936, and moved to
Szentendre in 1937.
Ámos, a Jew, was
taken to a labour
camp in Vojvodina in
1940, where he
continued to paint.
He was deported to
Germany in 1944, where he
died, prob ably in a
concentration camp. His wife
Margit lived until 1991. Her
Cubist paintings are on the
ground floor, while Ámos’s
works, including his account
of life in the camp, are
displayed on the first floor.

body of the legen dary
Serb ruler Prince
Lázár once lay in a
church. He was
killed by a traitor
at the Battle of
Kosovo Polje in

    was taken back to
    Serbia in the 1800s,
    and the church was
    later destroyed in a fire.
    Built between 1741 and
    1746, Preobraženska Church,
    is another fine Baroque
    Serbian Ortho dox church.
    It is also famous for the
    annual Serb Folk Festival
    that takes place here on
    19 August.
