MUSIC FESTIVALS
Music festivals – from Baroque
to jazz – feature regularly on
the international arts calendar.
Prominent events include the
annual Debrecen Jazz Festival
and the Sopron Early Music
Days. For fans of rock and
pop, the big gest event is the
three-day Sziget Festival
held in August.
NIGHTLIFEThere are plenty of buzzing
night spots in Budapest.
Some of the favourites
include Szóda, a big, brash
disco with two dance floors
and train-inspired decor, and
Dokk, a superb venue notable
for its top DJs and cutting-
edge music.
Outside the capital, the
university cities of Szeged and
Győr are among the liveliest,
with a wide range of pubs
and clubs. Győr’s Vigadó
Pince Pub has live bands most
nights, while the Mister Bigg
Pub stays open until the early
hours. In Veszprém, the
Expresszó Club is the busiest
venue, while the Mythos
Music Club features live actsor international DJs on
weekends. During the
summer almost all of Lake
Balaton’s resorts thump to the
beat of Euro-pop. Siófok’s
Palace Disco is one of the
country’s largest, only a 15-
minute walk out of the town
centre. A little more sophis-
ticated is the north Balaton
resort of Balatonfüred, where
the Macho Pub and Atrium
Music Club pull in the crowds.
The country is also home
to a number of classy casinos
attracting gamblers from
all over Europe and the
Middle East. Those in Győr
and Sopron are housed in
glorious historical buildings.
Most casinos stay open
24-hours and require visitors
to dress smartly.
