Ljubljana 1

Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, began life as the Roman
colony of Emona, a major trading cen tre that was
sacked by the Huns in AD 452. Reoccupied by Slavs
in the 7th century, the focus of the settlement was
moved to the east bank of the Ljubljanica river,
where both Ljubljana Castle and the Old Town are
located today. With a population of two hundred
and eighty thousand, it is one of Europe’s smal lest
capital cities. The Prešeren Square (Prešernov trg)
is a good base from which to explore the main
sights. On the right bank of the river is the fasci-
nating Old Town (Stari Grad), with its Baroque
architecture and several ancient churches. Important
museums and galleries, such as the Modern
Gallery and National Gallery, as well as the
sprawl ing Tivoli Park, are located on the left bank.
