CROATIA 463
Uninhabited Islands
Nature is left
undisturbed on these
islands, with woods of
pine, Holm oak and
oak stretching down to
the rocky shore.
Marine Life
Dozens of species of fish, including grouper,
inhabit the underwater ravines and caves
along the coast. The endangered monk seal,
protected in these waters, is highly valued.
Saplunara lies at the southernmost tip of the
island. It boasts the most beautiful beach in the
area and has been declared a nature reserve for
its greenery and lush vegetation.
The village of Babino Polje
was founded around the
middle of the 10th century by
a group of refugees from the
mainland. The governor’s
residence was built in 1554,
when the island became part
of the Republic of Ragusa,
now Dubrovnik.
Fishing Villages
The island’s ancient stone
villages are inhabited
mainly by farmers and
fishermen. Along with the
delightful bays and
surrounding coves, these
villages are lovely places to
visit and spend time.
