20th century, Ivan Meštrović

belonged to the Capogrosso-
Kavanjin family and was
bought by Meštrović in 1932
to set up an exhibition hall.
It can be visited with the

Considered Croatia’s oldest
museum, the Archaeological
Museum (Arheološki muzej)
was founded in 1820 and
moved to its present location
in 1914. It contains a fine
collection of finds from the
Roman, early Christian and
medieval periods that are
exhibited in rotation. Of par-
ticular interest are the finds
from the ruins of Salona
including sculptures, capitals,
sarcophagi, jewellery, coins
and small objects in glazed
terracotta and ceramic.

} Marjan Peninsula
Rising to the west of central
Split is the Marjan Peninsula,
a hilly, densely wooded area
crisscrossed by attractive foot-
paths. The best way to reach
Marjan is to walk through the
Varos district immediately west
of the Old Town, taking a
flight of steps which gradually
ascends Marjan’s flanks. Near
the top, fine views of Split’s
port, along with the islands
of Brač (see p472) and Hvar
(see pp474–5) to the south are
clearly visible. Near the summit
of Marjan is a small zoo. Paths
along the southern edge of
the penin sula lead past a
sequence of medieval chapels.
