P Shoemakers’ Tower
Str Manastirii.
At the northernmost point of
the citadel stands the 16-m
(52-ft) high Shoemakers’
Tower (Turnul Cizmarilor),
built in 1594. The unusual
hexa gonal structure incorpo-
rates a watchtower over the
Old Town. There was once an
identical watch tower on the
tower’s opposite side, from
where guards could sur vey the
surrounding area. Although it
retains much of its original
appear ance, the tower’s main
entrance and win dows have
been modified in recent years
to accommo date a radio sta-
tion and a newspaper office.

Str Manastirii.
The 15th-century Furriers’
Tower (Turnul Cojocarilor)
is one of the smallest of the
nine surviving towers. It is
linked to the Butchers’ Tower
by an ancient gate way through
which shepherds once took
cattle out to pasture.
